Joyce Ann Lucas was born to the late Charlie and Cleo Lucas on January 8, 1951 in Wilson County, North Carolina. She spent her formative years in Wilson, North Carolina where she graduated from Charles H. Darden High School and then moved to Washington, D.C.

Joyce was affectionately known as “Sis”, “Aunt Joyce Ann”, “Sister Joyce”, and “Ms. Joyce”. She was a very loving and caring person and a mother of three beautiful children: Robert, Leslie, and Anissa. Joyce loved life and enjoyed many interests. Those who knew her best knew how she loved to cook. The kitchen was the one place where Joyce ruled without question. She knew exactly what to do, when to do it, and how to do it and the food prepared by her loving hands, was without question, delicious! She loved people and never met a stranger. If you became her friend, you were a friend for life. She especially loved children and it brought her great joy to see them reach life’s milestones.

Joyce was an active member of the Washington, D.C. Chapter of the Darden High School Alumni. Her last employer was the Children’s National Medical Center until she retired because of her health. This retirement did not stop her work; it served as a platform for new beginnings, new work, and new friends. Joyce spent a great deal of time serving in local food banks and supporting the ministries of the Church of the Living God in Suitland, Maryland. Joyce was an active member of the church’s hospitality and missionary ministries and dedicated her retirement years to working in the church. She never asked for recognition. She did everything with the focus on giving God the glory.

On Friday, July 17, 2015, God called Joyce Ann Lucas to her eternal home after a period of illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Cleo Lucas and two siblings: Mary L.
