Mr. Luther Atkinson, 88, of White Plains, MD, formerly of Wilson County, transitioned on Friday, January 30, 2026, at his home in Maryland. He is the son of the late Sylvester Atkinson and Carrletha Atkinson Walker.
A graduate of Speight High School, Luther played second base for the Satchel Paige All-Stars and with the Negro Baseball League in the 1950s. He was drafted into the Army in 1960. Luther retired from the United States Bureau of Printing & Engraving.
In addition to his parents, Luther was preceded in death by his siblings: Ada Meeks, Jesse Atkinson, Erma Pitt, Henry Atkinson, Shirley A. Sharpe, Catherine Wooten, Ada Scott, Ozzie Staton, Mary Walker, Joseph Walker, Sr., Bevel Walker, Willie Walker, and Elnora Pearce.
Luther will be remembered by his wife, Bessie Pender Atkinson; son, Corey; daughter, Jeanette Jones; grandchildren; siblings, Clifton Atkinson, Roy Atkinson, Rufus Atkinson, Dorothy Davis, Foster Walker, Jr.; and many relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Maple Springs Baptist Church, 4131 Belt Road, Capitol Heights, MD. Interment will follow at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hodges–Edwards Funeral Home, Suitland, MD.
